93% of Parents Are In Denial
February 18, 2015
7% of parents reported their college students are experiencing mental health issues (National Alliance on Mental Illness, 2014).
Yet, last year nearly 50% of college students experienced overwhelming anxiety (2013 National Health Assessment).
And 33% had difficulty functioning due to depression.
Here's the truth: The current trend is that the emotional health of college students is only going to get worse in the near future.
Are you part of the 93% of parents who are in denial?
When asked during my speeches, nearly all students agree that their parents have no idea just how much they are struggling.
Reality hurts. But it's probably not as bad as how your kid feels.
Ask your kid today, "how are you really doing?"
Take the time to empathically listen, validate, and encourage him/her. Tell them their emotional health really matters to you.
