When athletes get stressed, the mind can often become negative.

To shift out of that mindset, use a mantra -- a word or phrase repeated to oneself to elicit the desired emotional state.

Anchoring: Linking that mantra with objects in the venue where you compete.

Look at the left foul pole while saying 'see the ball'.

Say to yourself 'aggressive' when you see the color red.

Repeat 'dig deeper' when you hear the bell ring in track.

Like the famous Pavlov's dog study (pairing a ringing bell with food and salivation), when you link stimuli together, it's powerful.
