Which is better to say to yourself before you compete?
According to one study from Harvard, it is..."I am excited."
Excitement is the optimal emotion for peak performance.
When I hear athletes use 'excited' to describe their feelings before they compete, I know they are in the best emotional mindset.
Excitement elevates one's energy level by drawing upon a deep wellspring of many positive emotions.
Telling yourself to be calm can be helpful too, but it can also inadvertently suppress this beneficial flow of positive emotions.
If you are competing today, let the excitement flow.
Focus on feeling excited.
